The role of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in the IZOD IndyCar Series Championship:
The winner at St. Petersburg has gone on to win the championship once in the five years of the event (Wheldon, 2005).
In 14 seasons, only four drivers have won the second race of the year and gone on to win the championship. They are: Buddy Lazier (2000, Phoenix); Sam Hornish Jr. (2001, Homestead-Miami); Tony Kanaan (2004, Phoenix); Dario Franchitti (2009, Long Beach).

The 1.8-mile, 14-turn circuit incorporates streets of downtown St. Petersburg and a section of runway of Albert Whitted Airport.
After the long frontstrecth, there's a tight right-hander into Turn 1 and then a quick left-hand turn. Plenty of drivers have gotten into trouble in these two turns over the years. There are two other long straights with braking zones that afford opportunities to overtake.
