The NTT INDYCAR SERIES journey to become the most sustainable motorsport in North America

2030 Targets
Emissions:
  • Reduce race operations emissions by 50%
Energy:
  • Source 75% renewable electricity for all INDYCAR events
Waste:
  • Implement recycling and composting at 100% of INDYCAR events

Emissions
INDYCAR is striving to reduce race operations emissions by 50% by 2030.
In 2023, Shell, the Official Fuel of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, introduced a 100% renewably sourced racing fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60%. This makes the NTT INDYCAR SERIES the first North American racing series to use 100% renewable racing fuel. All INDYCAR and IMS Productions transporters are fueled with renewable diesel for all racing events, reducing greenhouse emissions by up to 85% compared to traditional diesel. Renewable diesel is considered a “drop in” fuel, meaning no alterations need to be made to the vehicle or engine, which leads to meeting or exceeding performance of traditional fossil-based diesel fuels.
Sustainability Highlight: Emissions Tracking with NTT
Penske Entertainment works alongside NTT DATA to track emissions, using a state-of-the-art tracking platform. This process streamlines the data collection effort, reducing gaps while transforming impactful data in an efficient manner.
This effort would not be possible without data input from the entire sport’s ecosystem, including vendors, stakeholders, partners and fans. This data collection initiative helps guide decisions and measure progress as we continue Racing Toward Zero.

Energy
INDYCAR is aiming to source 75% renewable electricity for all its events by 2030.
To achieve this target. INDYCAR will collaborate with partners, race promoters and renewable energy suppliers to replace traditional fossil fuel infrastructure.
Waste
INDYCAR is working toward implementing recycling and composting at 100% of its events by 2030.
INDYCAR will implement robust waste diversion programs where they do not exist. This includes identifying local providers of recycling and compost for all INDYCAR event markets.
Sustainability Highlight:
INDYCAR introduced a carbon-fiber and magnesium recycling program for the 2025 racing season. The program will recycle and repurpose damaged race vehicle parts and prevent additional contributions to landfill.
DID YOU KNOW: Firestone is using racing and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES as a proving ground to demonstrate the performance of the guayule alternate Firestone Firehawk tires. These guayule tires, made of a drought-resistant, heat-tolerant, woody desert shrub native to the American Southwest, are used in all four-street-course races in 2025.

INDYCAR is focused on innovative ways to decarbonize both on track and off. Our sport recognizes its unique vantage point to play a powerful role driving a more sustainable future across racing’s impactful landscape.

In 2023, Penske Entertainment, parent company of the NTT INDYCAR Series and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway developed its first sustainability report. The Accelerating Change report can be downloaded here.
