WEST ALLIS, Wis. -- Victory in the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest put Will Power in the driver's seat for his first Verizon IndyCar Series championship.
Power, driver of the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car, has 602 points heading into the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma on Aug. 24. The season-closing MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway on Aug. 30 is worth double points. Both will be telecast by NBCSN.
Teammate Helio Castroneves is 39 points back in second (563 total), followed by Simon Pagenaud with 510 points, Ryan Hunter-Reay with 494, Juan Pablo Montoya with 488 and Scott Dixon with 472. They are the only drivers in title contention.
Penske Racing has won 12 Indy car championships, but the last was in 2006 with Sam Hornish Jr. Power was the championship runner-up in 2010, '11 and 12. Castroneves finished second in 2013.
"The ultimate goal is for (team owner) Roger (Penske) to win one," Power said. "Just let too many get away. Too many times second. We got to keep that in mind."
The GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma is Aug. 24, followed by the MAVTV 500 on Aug. 30 on Auto Club Speedway. Both will be telecast on NBCSN.
