IZOD IndyCar points leader Helio Castroneves suffered cuts on his legs and reported neck and back pain after his stock car made heavy driver's side contact with a concrete barrier during practice Aug. 9 for a Stock Car Brasil race on the streets of Ribeirao Preto.

The three-time Indianapolis 500 champion walked from the wreckage under his own power.

Castroneves was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and released. He is expected to compete in the Aug. 11 race (Round 7 of the 12-race season) in the Shell Racing car, pending clearance by doctors.

Last December, Castroneves, reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Tony Kanaan and Rubens Barrichello competed in the final race of the season. Barrichello, who drove for KV Racing Technology in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season, competes full time in the Stock Car Brasil series this year. He is ninth in the standings, with a high finish of second in Salvador (the first colonial capital of Brazil in the state of Bahia).

Daniel Serra is the championship points leader.

The next IZOD IndyCar Series race is the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma on Aug. 25. An Open Test at the road course is scheduled for Aug. 21.
