Veteran Bruno Junqueira will drive the No. 67 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing car in the Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT as a substitute for Josef Newgarden, who was injured in a two-car crash during the GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma on Aug. 26.

Newgarden underwent surgery Aug. 28 to repair a broken left index finger. The IZOD IndyCar Series rookies and team officials are focused on him returning to the seat in the Sept. 15 season finale at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

“I’m really disappointed to not be in the car this weekend but I know Bruno will do a great job for SFHR,” Newgarden said. “I’ll be in Baltimore helping Bruno and the team in any way I can and focusing on healing for Fontana.”

Noting Junqueira’s Indy car experience, team co-owner Sarah Fisher said the team is confident it found the right substitute for the race on the 2-mile temporary street circuit. He had eight CART victories and finished second in the CART championship three times.

Junqueira made his CART debut in 2001 with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, finishing 16th in the standings with a win at Road America and was the runner-up to Scott Dixon for Rookie of the Year. He won the FIA International Formula 3000 Championship title with four wins and one second-place performance as a member of the Petrobras Junior team in 2000.

Junqueira has made six Indianapolis 500 starts, including from the pole position in 2002.

“It is lucky that we were able to call on Bruno for this weekend's race,” Fisher said. “He has had great results prior to climbing into the No. 67 car, and I hope we can give him the right platform to bring home a solid finish this weekend in Baltimore. I know Josef is disappointed in the circumstances, as we all are, but this team is being built around him and his seat will be ready for him when he’s ready. We look forward to a healthy and speedy recovery for Josef.”

He also will be competing in the American Le Mans Series race this weekend. Junqueira, 35, from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, is a full-time competitor in the Prototype Challenge class. He and the Rocketsports Racing team earned the pole for the Sebring 12 Hours in March and recently won at Mosport Park in Canada.

“I am very happy to be back in IndyCar with SFHR for the Baltimore race weekend,” Junqueira said. “Sarah’s team is very organized and has been fast all season. They have done a great job with Josef and I hope to give them a good race weekend in Baltimore while Josef is healing.”

Twenty-five cars are entered in the second IZOD IndyCar Series visit to Baltimore.
