Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge and INDYCAR SERIES veteran Katherine Legge will add another machine to her list of cars in which she has competed in her diverse career when she drives a midget car in the 2025 Chili Bowl Nationals for Indianapolis-based Abacus Racing.
Legge will have a familiar teammate, as AJ Foyt Racing driver Santino Ferrucci will be one of her teammates in the prestigious annual indoor race that starts Jan. 12 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The feature race is Saturday night, Jan. 18.
This new challenge for England native Legge comes in a career in which she has raced in open-wheel cars, sports cars, stock cars and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The Chili Bowl will be Legge’s first race on dirt.
“I have been very fortunate to have driven a lot of different racing cars in a lot of different racing series all over the world,” Legge said. “I love that I’ve had such a diverse career in racing so far. I always follow the biggest races across the disciplines. The Chili Bowl is one of those events I have always followed with awe and admiration. It was something I just said to myself I had to try at least once.”
But Legge knows muscling a lightweight, powerful midget car on a tight dirt track will be tough.
“I have spent my whole career driving on pavement, so to add dirt in addition to a car I have never driven before I know is going to be very challenging, but I am excited at the opportunity,” Legge said.
Abacus Team Principal Brent Cox has arranged test days for Legge and Chili Bowl veteran Ferrucci, helping both learn the idiosyncrasies of the unique machines.
“I have driven some of the most technologically developed cars in the world,” Legge said. “When Brent told me there are no rear-view mirrors and no radio comms, it made me pause a bit, but then I realized that it’s the same for everyone else, so I would just have to figure it out. I am very excited.”
Abacus Racing became just the second entrant in the history of USAC to win the USAC Triple Crown when it won the USAC Sprint Car Championship with Logan Seavey in October. In addition to Ferrucci, Legge will be teammates with Kaylee Bryson, who will drive the team’s No. 57 entry at the Chili Bowl in replacement of Seavey, who will drive for Kevin Swindell.
