NTT INDYCAR SERIES veteran Callum Ilott will test for Arrow McLaren this week at Homestead-Miami Speedway as the team eyes a replacement for the injured David Malukas at the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding on Sunday, March 10.
Malukas underwent successful surgery Feb. 13 to repair torn ligaments in his dislocated left wrist, injuries suffered in a mountain biking accident. Malukas’ recovering timeline is estimated to be six weeks following the removal of his stitches Feb. 22, according to an Arrow McLaren statement.
“We all wish David a speedy recovery, and we’re working out some options with the No. 6 NTT DATA Arrow McLaren Chevrolet crew in the meantime,” Arrow McLaren Team Principal Gavin Ward said. “Callum had a seat fit last week and will test with us in Homestead, and we’re looking forward to working with him this week. Then, hopefully we’ll be able to confirm our roster for St. Pete soon after.”
Ilott, from England, drove for Juncos Hollinger Racing in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. His best finish was fifth, in 2023 at the season opener at St. Petersburg and at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in the season finale.
“Obviously, I feel sorry for David and the team,” Ilott said. “It’s not easy to be in this position, especially just ahead of the start of the season. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery. I’m glad I’m able to help out the team, and it’s a privilege to test this week with Arrow McLaren. I’m thankful they’re considering me for the opportunity.”
Malukas is entering his third season in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES but his first with Arrow McLaren after moving to the team following his first two seasons with Dale Coyne Racing with HMD. He produced a podium finish in each of his first two seasons after graduating from INDY NXT by Firestone, both at World Wide Technology Raceway, placing second in 2022 and third last season.
