It was a big day for threes and NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver/owner Ed Carpenter on Thursday, when the team announced he will compete in all five oval events this season.
Three-time Indianapolis 500 pole winner Carpenter will drive the No. 33 Chevrolet in the XPEL 375 on March 20 at Texas Motor Speedway, the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on May 29 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Hy-VeeDeals.com 250 on July 23 and the Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers on July 24 at Iowa Speedway and the Bommarito Automotive Group on Aug. 20 at World Wide Technology Raceway.
The announcement was made at 3:33 p.m. (ET) March 3 (3/3 – Carpenter’s birthday!) on the team’s Twitter feed with this post:
“A birthday of 3/3. 3 #IndyCar Wins. 3 #Indy 500 Poles. The goal to be the first in the field of 33 miles. (And that was all connected after the number was chosen. 33 just fits.)”
In January at INDYCAR Content Days, popular Indianapolis resident Carpenter told assembled media his 2022 oval-only program was set only for the Indianapolis 500, where he will attempt to make his 19th career start in search of his first victory in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
Carpenter, the only owner-driver in the series, previously used No. 20 in his oval-only schedule. But Conor Daly is using that number full time this season for the team in his No. 20 BitNile Chevrolet.
