Mercedes EQ Formula E teammates Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries will sample NTT INDYCAR SERIES machinery in a test Dec. 6 at Sebring International Raceway.

Vandoorne, 29, from Belgium, will drive a Chevrolet-powered car for Arrow McLaren SP. De Vries, 26, from the Netherlands, will test in a Meyer Shank Racing Honda.

Both drivers are eyeing new rides for the future, as the Mercedes EQ team is withdrawing from Formula E after the 2021-22 season. De Vries won the 2020-21 Formula E Drivers’ Championship for Mercedes, also scoring two victories.

“First off, I would like to thank everyone at Meyer Shank Racing for the opportunity to test with them,” de Vries said. “MSR is the reigning Indy 500 winner, so it’s an absolute honor to be testing with them.

“It will be my first time getting to experience any sort of racing and testing in the U.S. I have been following INDYCAR for a while, and I’ve always been curious as to what it would be like. Racing in the U.S. is really raw and appealing to me, so I’m really looking forward to this new experience and seeing where it can take us.”

Besides his Formula E championship, de Vries also has won season titles in FIA Formula 2 in 2019 – the last step before Formula One – and the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 in 2014. He serves as a reserve driver for the Mercedes Formula One team, a role he shares with Vandoorne.

De Vries also has extensive sports car experience in the FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series and has made three starts in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“Having Nyck come test with us falls in line with the team growing and looking ahead to the future,” team co-owner Michael Shank said. “There are no set plans as of now for where we see placing Nyck, but it’s important to always be looking for talent.

“As a team, we’re in the position where we have the ability to now test different drivers and give them the opportunity to be successful over in the States. Nyck has clearly proven his worth in Europe, so we are excited to see what he can do in an INDYCAR SERIES car.”

Vandoorne raced full time for McLaren in F1 in the 2017 and 2018 seasons after winning the GP2 (now Formula 2) title in 2015 with five wins, beating runner-up current NTT INDYCAR SERIES star Alexander Rossi to the championship by 160 points. He finished second in the 2019-20 Formula E season for the Mercedes team and ninth in the 2020-21 season.
