By the Numbers: Warm-up Results
Rinus VeeKay continued to show his affection for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, leading the warm-up Saturday morning for the GMR Grand Prix.
VeeKay turned a top lap of 1 minute, 10.5598 seconds in the No. 21 Sonax/Autogeek Chevrolet to lead the 30-minute session. He will start seventh in the 85-lap race this afternoon, with coverage starting at 2 p.m. (ET) on NBC and the INDYCAR Radio Network.
The 14-turn, 2.439-mile circuit is a fast comfort zone for VeeKay. He finished fifth in this event last July as a rookie. He also won the NTT P1 Award for pole and finished third in the INDYCAR Harvest GP Race 1 last October – both career bests.
Another young star of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, Alex Palou, was second in the warm-up at 1:10.5924 in the No. 10 The American Legion Honda. Six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion and current championship leader Scott Dixon, who qualified a disappointing 16th Saturday, was third at 1:10.6617 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.
Two-time series champion Josef Newgarden was fourth at 1:10.8277 in the No. 2 Snap-on Tools Team Penske Chevrolet. Newgarden, who will start second, has been in the top five of all four on-track sessions for this event.
Ed Jones rounded out the top five at 1:10.8735 in the No. 18 MOUSER MOLEX Honda.
NTT P1 Award winner Romain Grosjean ended up 20th in the warm-up at 1:11.7465 in the No. 51 NURTEC ODT Honda.
