Rahal, Force talk Gateway races and 'quirky' home life
AUG 16, 2018
Successful racers Graham Rahal and Courtney Force are married but spend much of their time apart at different racetracks on the same weekend – Rahal as a Verizon IndyCar Series driver and Force as an NHRA Funny Car drag racer.
When the royal racing couple had the opportunity to be in St. Louis together this week to promote their upcoming events at Gateway Motorsports Park, they leapt at the chance. Rahal returns to the St. Louis region for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Valvoline on Gateway’s 1.25-mile oval on Aug. 24-25. Force will be back for the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals on the Gateway drag strip from Sept. 21-23.
“It’s great being able to help promote the same track like Gateway Motorsports Park,” Force said, “and try to bring the fans in to see two completely different types of events that are run on two different tracks right next door to each other.”
Rahal and Force each drive for teams run by their fathers who are legends within their respective racing disciplines. Bobby Rahal is co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in INDYCAR, while John Force owns and still drives for his namesake John Force Racing in NHRA.
In addition to visiting numerous media outlets in the St. Louis area to talk racing, Graham and Courtney gave IndyCar.com a glimpse into their home life – when they can spend time together relaxing between races – by way of a quick question-and-answer session.
You are both obviously very competitive at the racetrack. Are you competitive with each other at home?
Rahal: Not too much. There are times when things can come up that we’re competitive about, but when we’re at home we just try to be at home and be as normal as we can be. She’s just not a normal person at all. I mean, I’m very normal.
Force: Yeah, right.
Whose closet is more organized?
Rahal: Me. Not even close.
Force: Some days.
Who’s the better chef?
Rahal: Her.
Force: Yes, I agree with that.
Rahal: I do the grilling, she does the rest. Actually, we’re a pretty good team.
Whose trophies are displayed more prominently?
Force: They’re evenly displayed in our office together.
Rahal: In our house in California is mostly Wallys (the trophy awarded to NHRA event winners) and most of my trophies are in Indy. My permanent residence is still in Indianapolis; I spend more time there, so we kind of split it up.
Who is quirkier?
Rahal: She’s a Force, are you kidding me?!
Force: I don’t know about that, he’s very weird.
Is it true you have a motorcycle in your kitchen?
Rahal: We have seven of them.
Force: Not in our kitchen but in the house. That would be the one thing that we probably disagree on.
Rahal: I lied, we have eight of them in the living room.
Force: That are on display in our house.
And you have mannequins on display, too?
Force: That’s in Indy. We’ve got about four or five of them on display. That’s another disagreement.
Rahal: We have three, but I actually need to go build No. 4 this week.
Force: Which of them have my firesuit?
Rahal: I don’t have any female mannequins, nor do I have any firesuits of yours. Truth is, I started to forget what went to what. I had a suit and I was like, “Man, I don’t even know when I wore this,” so what I started to do was for big events that were important to me – like, my next mannequin is Detroit 2017 (when he won both races of the doubleheader), head to toe; I have the gloves, I have the shoes, I have the suit and the helmet, so I know that that was Detroit 2017. You can laugh at me, but other guys were buying mannequins because they were like, “That’s a good idea! That way, I’ll remember!” Other than one time, our (home security) alarm went off (while no one was home) and the cops came and they went in the basement. And the guy said he about shot my mannequin to death because he thought (it was an intruder).
Force: I wish he did. They terrify me and I don’t understand them. You can just look at a photo if you want to see what you were wearing.
Rahal: It’s not that easy.
So, do you want to revise that statement about who’s quirkier?
Force: Yeah, Graham is, exactly. Who has mannequins dressed as them?
Rahal: I have more personality, which means I’m weirder.
Ticket information for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 is available at gatewaymsp.com. The race airs live at 8 p.m. ET Saturday, Aug. 25 on NBCSN and the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network.
