ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Santiago Urrutia led a Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian 1-2 finish today to claim his second Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tire win of the season in the second race of a weekend doubleheader at Road America.

Morning rain drenched the 4.014-mile road course and forced the field to start the race on wet tires.

Ed Jones started from the pole in his No. 11 Jebel Ali Resorts and Hotels Dallara IL-15 and fended off early charges from Zach Veach and Dean Stoneman, until Jones spun coming off Turn 6 after being hit from behind by Carlin teammate Felix Serralles. The Carlin pair limped onto pit road with Serralles forced to retire and Jones continuing.

Stoneman took the lead but it was short-lived as his right front tire went flat on a Lap 9 restart, allowing the Schmidt Peterson brigade of Urrutia (No. 55 Mazda/SPM) and Andre Negrao (No. 17 Novac Sports) to move past.

Urrutia used his push to pass to clear his teammate and take the lead, cruising to an 8.1504-second gap on Negrao at the checkered flag.

“At the beginning, it was tricky conditions and I said, ‘OK, I’m going to stay here and wait and save my tires for the end,” said Urrutia. “On the first restart, Serralles was behind me and passed me in Turn 5 and then happens to crash.

“I did a good restart and passed Stoneman and Andre, and then I started to push really hard and my car was really, really good. I was trying to get the wet lines (to preserve the rain tires) and as soon as the track gets dry, I just stayed on the dry lines and just kept that.”

“On the last lap when my engineer said, ‘Santi, you are leading the race,’ that’s when I realized I was leading the race.”

Negrao’s second-place finish gave him his first career Indy Lights podium, while Veach recovered from an early spin to finish third.

Stoneman rebounded from the flat tire and powered through the field on slick tires to finish ninth. Jones finished 13th and saw his championship lead over Stoneman trimmed to 19 points.
