ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – As Verizon IndyCar Series teams set themselves up for Verizon P1 qualifying this afternoon, the pace was fast and furious this morning in the third practice of the weekend for the KOHLER Grand Prix. When the checkered flag fell, it was Chip Ganassi Racing’s Tony Kanaan atop the time charts.
Kanaan’s fast lap of 1 minute, 42.6580 seconds (140.763 mph) in the No. 10 NTT Data Chevrolet was the fastest thus far this weekend. Teammate Scott Dixon was second in the No. 9 Clorox Chevrolet at 1:42.6693 (140,747 mph).

With 231 laps turned, all 22 cars logged at least one lap in the 45-minute session. The session was not without issue, as Andretti Autosport’s Carlos Munoz suffered a mechanical issue five minutes in, causing a brief red flag and lowering a setback to the No. 26 team that was classified in the top five in both Friday practice sessions.
Kanaan, on the other hand, is now the only driver to finish each of the three sessions thus far in the top five. In five previous Indy car races at Road America, the 2004 Verizon IndyCar Series champion’s best start is 10th and best race finish is fourth. The Brazilian is scheduled to make his record 258th consecutive race start Sunday.
Dixon will be making a milestone start himself, as Sunday marks his 200th straight in Indy cars dating to 2001. Chip Ganassi Racing rookie Max Chilton (No. 8 Gallagher Chevrolet) also fared well in the session, finishing fourth at 1:43.0450 (140.234 mph).
Team Penske teammates Will Power (No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet, 1:42.8490) and Simon Pagenaud (No. 22 Menards Chevrolet, 1:43.0973) were third and fifth, respectively, in the session. The top Honda was Ryan Hunter-Reay, sixth in the No. 28 DHL Andretti Autosport entry (1:43.1284).
Plenty of eyes will be on Josef Newgarden this weekend, as the American is driving with a fractured collarbone and hand sustained in a crash at Texas Motor Speedway on June 12. Newgarden turned just nine laps in this morning’s session, placing 13th with a fast lap of 1:43.4366.
Qualifying for the KOHLER Grand Prix, featuring three knockout rounds climaxing with the Firestone Fast Six, begins at 4 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on RaceControl.IndyCar.com, with a delayed broadcast on NBCSN at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Sunday’s 50-lap race on the 4.014-mile permanent road course will be the first Indy car race on the track since 2007. Coverage starts at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN and the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network.
