JR Hildebrand will drive the No. 21 Chevrolet for Ed Carpenter Racing while regular driver Josef Newgarden recovers from injuries sustained in a crash during the postponed Firestone 600 on June 12 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Newgarden sustained a broken right clavicle and a small fracture on his right hand after his car was collected by the car of Conor Daly on Lap 42 of the race. The race was suspended by rain after Lap 71 of the scheduled 248-lap event. Newgarden returned to Indianapolis after he was released from Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas on June 13.
Hildebrand, the 2009 Indy Lights champion and 2011 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, has made five starts for Ed Carpenter Racing over the last three seasons, including a sixth-place finish at the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
The 28-year-old native of Sausalito, Calif., will test with the team at Road America on June 15 alongside reigning Indy Lights champion Spencer Pigot.
“Fully expect my dude @josefnewgarden to be back at it in no time, but will fill in with @ECRIndy until then,” Hildebrand wrote on Twitter on Monday. “Obviously not ideal circumstances, helps to know (Josef) & team. Now we see how good of friends we are when I start calling to review his data.”
