DETROIT – Actor Nathan Kress, best known for his role as Freddie Benson in the popular Nickelodeon series “iCarly,” is becoming a paddock regular at Verizon IndyCar Series races.
After showing up at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in April, and before that driving in the 2015 Long Beach pro/celebrity race (where he placed second), and even before that at other series races in California, Kress is attending Sunday’s second race of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit at the Raceway at Belle Isle Park. It’s the first time he’ll watch a Verizon IndyCar Series race away from the West Coast.
Accompanying Kress (pictured above with 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon this year at Long Beach) will be his wife, London, and her family, who are new to Verizon IndyCar Series races.
“They never learned the ins and outs of racing until I showed up and started talking about it,” said Kress, a native of Glendale, California.
Sunday will be a good introduction. Since Kress is a celebrity addition to the weekend, his family will watch from a suite, he’ll greet the drivers during prerace ceremonies and take pace car laps before the start of the race.
Before the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit, the Kresses spent time at London’s family home, just outside of Adrian, Michigan, about an hour southwest of Detroit. London attended her younger sister’s high school graduation.
“I’ve never been here in the summer. It’s been heaven, pretty much,” Nathan Kress said. “I have never seen this much green in my whole life.”
Kress is no stranger to Michigan. Nathan and London met working on the 2014 film “Into The Storm.” He had a lead role and London was an actress and stunt double in the film. London is also known for her work on another Michigan-based film production, “Oz the Great and Powerful,” doubling and doing stunt work for Michelle Williams’ character, Glinda.
