INDIANAPOLIS – Get ready for a record-breaking qualifying session this afternoon for the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
Under ideally cool conditions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, four Verizon IndyCar Series drivers clocked laps in this morning’s practice faster than the official track record Will Power set on the 2.439-mile road course a year ago. The leader was Power himself, taking the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet to a lap of 1 minute, 9.3184 seconds (126.667 mph) that’s nearly two-tenths of a second better than the lap that won him the Verizon P1 Award and pole position for the 2015 race.

Also turning laps faster than the track standard this morning were: Juan Pablo Montoya in the No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet (1:09.3314, 126.644 mph), Simon Pagenaud in the No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevy (1:09.4248, 126.474 mph) and Scott Dixon in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevy (1:09.4484, 126.431 mph).
All this speed among the 25-car field took place on the black-sidewall Firestone primary tires. The red-sidewall alternate tires, featuring a softer compound that normally yields faster lap times than the primaries, will be in full use during qualifying.
Official track records can only be set in qualifying or a race, so Power’s 2015 standard remains for a few hours.
Three rounds of knockout qualifying, culminating in the Firestone Fast Six, begin at 3 p.m. ET and will be streamed live at RaceControl.IndyCar.com. The 82-lap race takes place Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC and Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network).
Pagenaud, coming off back-to-back wins at Long Beach and Barber Motorsports Park, is the Verizon IndyCar Series championship leader after four races with 188 points. Dixon is second with 140 and Montoya third at 136. Pagenaud (2014) and Power (2015) are the two past winners of the Angie’s List Grand Prix.
