2015 highlights: AJ Foyt Racing expanded to two full-time cars last season with the addition of Jack Hawksworth alongside Takuma Sato. The growing pains were evident in what team president Larry Foyt pointed out as inconsistent performances. Sato, who delivered the team its first Verizon IndyCar Series win in 11 years when he was victorious at Long Beach in 2013, managed a single top-five finish in 2015 (second at Belle Isle-2). Each driver totaled but five top-10 finishes.

What’s new for 2016: Internally, the team made reorganizational moves in the offseason, luring George Klotz from Andretti Autosport to become team director. Klotz will also call race strategy for Hawksworth, looking to step forward in his third Verizon IndyCar Series season. Sato, meanwhile, enters his fourth year with the team – making the former Formula One pilot the longest-tenured fulltime driver in the team’s 51-year history other than its namesake, A.J. Foyt. With a year under the belt as a multi-car team, Larry Foyt is expecting improvement across the board.

They said it: “A lot of people are used to their roles, we were able to analyze over the winter kind of what our weaknesses were and make some changes,” Larry Foyt said. “We’re cautiously optimistic that we’ll be able to come out of the box pretty well and be very competitive. INDYCAR is so competitive, there really aren’t any bad cars anymore. Everybody’s so darn good and so competitive. If you’re off your game just a teeny, tiny bit, you can find yourself down at the bottom. When you get it right, you can fight for the top. It’s tough just getting that consistency. We had moments (in 2015) when we were fast, but we just want to be more consistently quick everywhere we go. That’s the goal.”
