Despite rain that washed away most of Friday’s activities, the 38th Toyota Grand Prix has to be rated a positive event, according to Jim Michaelian, president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach.

“Our total weekend attendance was in excess of 170,000,” Michaelian said, “and the ‘down’ numbers caused by Friday rain were made up with an extraordinary Saturday crowd, as well as our usual strong Sunday attendance.

“Coupled with some great racing, we’re proud with the overall results of the 38th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.”

Will Power, driving the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car, and Simon Pagenaud in the No. 77 Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports car hooked up in a duel the final 10 laps. Power won by 0.8675 of a second in the 85-lap race on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street circuit.
