Classic Rewind: Goodyear masters Michigan in 1992
APR 09, 2020
This week, as we prepare for Round 3 of the INDYCAR iRacing Challenge, we travel back to 1992 and the Marlboro 500 at Michigan International Speedway.
While 1992 may be best remembered for the Indianapolis 500 duel between Al Unser Jr., and Scott Goodyear, the other 500-mile race that season was just as compelling. Like Indianapolis, Michael Andretti dominated early before falling out with mechanical issues. Mario Andretti took the point after his son's retirement and held the lead as Goodyear and fellow Canadian Paul Tracy fought their way to the front.
Tracy eventually got to the front and built a sizeable lead on Goodyear until the final caution flew with 20 laps to go. That set up a fight between the two Canadians for the win.
