As we begin to look toward the 2019 racing season with great anticipation, our INDYCAR Digital Media and Photography groups wanted to give a last holiday present. Earlier this month, we challenged our photographers to provide favorite images they captured from this year, along with a few of their words on each image.
In Volume 1, we started with our photographers' favorite images from 2018, beginning with preseason testing through the INDYCAR Grand Prix.
Today, we bring you Volume 2, covering races from the 102nd Indianapolis 500 through Toronto. On Friday, we'll conclude with photos from Mid-Ohio through Sonoma and the offseason. Enjoy!
Race #6 - The 102nd Running of the Indianapolis 500
Photographer: Joe Skibinski
One of the biggest stories of this year's Indy 500 was the return of Danica Patrick for the final race of her motorsports career. She brought back the signature neon-green colors of GoDaddy, which meant you were definitely not going to miss her on track.

There is nothing quite like Indianapolis 500 race morning.

Rookie Zach Veach was in the hot seat at Indianapolis - not once, but twice.

It’s been great to see Will Power improve his oval craft the last few seasons. Will is one of the legends of our sport; racing history could never forget him. After winning the Indianapolis 500 and creating moments like this, how could it?
Photographer: Chris Jones
Who will ever forget Will Power's reaction to winning the Indy 500? Usually Will doesn't show much emotion when he wins an IndyCar Series race, but we saw another side of him in victory lane at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Victory circle at Indy this year was a delight. As Will emerged from the cockpit, his eyes and expression took the face of a madman. The scene he left was also reminiscent of a crime scene, only covered in milk...

Elation. Relief. Accomplishment. Respect. Immortality. All in a single image.
Races #7 & #8 - Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix
Photographer: James Black
The trees on Belle Isle grew almost perfectly around the outline of the Dallara chassis.
Photographer: Chris Owens
Detroit is a great circuit for photographers who know how to take advantage of it. The water, trees and skyline add to some already visually stimulating images. This is one of my favorite locations of the season. The other photographers and I have been attacked numerous years by Red-Winged Blackbirds shooting in this area. That makes this shot extra adventurous and rewarding to capture!

We got a little bit of rain during qualifying for the second Detroit race this year and the appearance a daring squirrel. As the cars turned the corner, I hoped the little guy would get out of the way by time the cars got to me. Robert Wickens was the first one to me and the squirrel had had to scamper out of the way.

There was Ryan Hunter-Reay in the Scott Fountain after winning this year in Detroit. I yelled to him, “Ryan, hop up on that lion!” Here you have it!
Race #9 - DXC Technology 600 (Texas)
Photographer: Chris Owens (Editor's Choice)
There's something magical about INDYCAR racing under the lights at Texas Motor Speedway.
Photographer: Chris Owens
Texas Motor Speedway is always a race I look forward to. The evening light makes for stunning images we are only able to make in these conditions a few times a year. There they go, racing into the sunset! Ahhh, I love it.
Race #10 - KOHLER Grand Prix (Road America)
Photographer: Shawn Gritzmacher (Editor's Choice)
Anticipation prior to the green flag. Road America has this section between the final turn and the climb up the hill toward the start/finish line. It's long enough for all cars to get properly formed up, ready to put on a show in Wisconsin.

Josef Newgarden dueled with Ryan Hunter-Reay at Road America. He had to be absolutely perfect all day or Ryan would pounce. Josef never flinched.

Road America is so special, not only to the series, teams and drivers, but also to the fans. They are passionate, knowledgeable fans, and they come to Road America in droves.
Photographer: Matt Fraver
Sometimes you just get lucky. I had gone down to Turn 5 to get a photo of the start of the USF2000 race on Saturday at Road America, but ended up getting the celebration doughnuts of Indy Lights Race 1 winner, Colton Herta.
Race #11 - Iowa Corn 300
Photographer: Chris Jones (Editor's Choice)
James Hinchcliffe is one of those drivers that isn't afraid to have a little fun and make some doughnuts after a solid win. Note the smoke off his tires. It's not the traditional Firestone tire white smoke - there's a noticeable tinge of yellow from Iowa Speedway's new corncob-motif start/finish line.
Photographer: Shawn Gritzmacher
Hinch’s dominating finish to the race at Iowa was an incredible drive, followed by an incredible victory circle celebration.
Race #12 - Honda Indy Toronto
Photographer: James Black
Photo holes in track fences aren't always where you'd like them, so you have to make do with what's there. In this case I found a spot where the fencing was bent just enough to get a somewhat clear shot of the Toronto skyline. It wasn't large enough to avoid the wall and signage, but in hindsight, I'm grateful.
Photographer: Chris Owens
I really enjoy this photo of James Hinchcliffe in Toronto. The best thing about my job is the fact that I’m paid to make things look interesting. I jog around all day trying to do something fresh, hopping things, sneaking through cracks, lying on the ground and, in this case, helping myself onto the roof. It’s what I do.
Photographer: Matt Fraver
I always knew that if I was able to make it to Toronto, I would have to make my way to this marker inside Turn 3 at Exhibition Place. It just happened to be July 14th as well. Godspeed to Jeff and Gary. "Stay Hungry"

At some point during a race weekend, I always try to shoot from an elevated point of view, but as the green flag fell for the Honda Indy Toronto, I had yet to find the opportunity. Meandering around the circuit after the first handful of laps, I found myself at this location. The angle really highlights the speed of these cars.

One of the stars of the 2018 season was rookie Robert Wickens. It was great to see him on the podium at his hometown race in Toronto. Hopefully, Robert will be back on the track again soon.
