ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin – Josef Newgarden delivered Team Penske its third Verizon P1 Award in as many years at the KOHLER Grand Prix with a thrilling pole-winning lap in qualifying Saturday at Road America.

In the Firestone Fast Six, the third and final round of knockout qualifying, Newgarden sped around the 14-turn, 4.014-mile permanent road course in 1 minute, 43.2026 seconds (140.020 mph) in the No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet to secure the fifth pole of his Verizon IndyCar Series career and third this season.

KOHLER GRAND PRIX: Unofficial qualifying results

Max ChiltonNewgarden follows Helio Castroneves (2016) and Will Power (2017) as Road America pole winners for Team Penske, which has collected 10 overall at the track.

Power qualified second Saturday in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet with a lap of 1:43.2508 (139.954 mph), as Team Penske locked down the front row on the grid for the second straight year. Power, who has reached the Firestone Fast Six at all five events where it has been contested this season, won the KOHLER Grand Prix in 2016.

Andretti Autosport teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Alexander Rossi will share the second row on the grid after qualifying third and fourth, respectively. For Hunter-Reay, it was a season-best qualifying effort. Rounding out the top six qualifiers were Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ Robert Wickens in fifth and Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan’s Sebastien Bourdais in sixth.

Scott Dixon, the current Verizon IndyCar Series points leader and defending race winner, qualified eighth.
