ABC's Good Morning America with Ed Carpenter

Five Verizon IndyCar Series drivers and an enthusiastic group of race fans came to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway early Wednesday, May 2 to pump up the volume and energy for two live segments of ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

ABC's Good Morning AmericaTory Johnson hosted two live “Deals and Steals” segments from the Yard of Bricks on pit road for “GMA” between 7 and 9 a.m., with help from drivers James Hinchcliffe, Ed Carpenter, Spencer Pigot, Ed Jones and Matheus Leist, and a group of passionate fans who arrived at IMS well before sunrise. IMS President J. Douglas Boles also joined the fan group for the on-air segments.

“Deals and Steals” provides “GMA” viewers with special discounts on must-have products from small businesses located near the area where each segment is filmed. The products from Indiana-based companies featured Wednesday included YouTheFan: The #1 Oven Mitt (Warsaw), Peepers: Readers & Sunglasses (Michigan City), ShoreBags: Totes, Duffels & Boat Bags (Chesterton) and Smoking Goose: Assorted Meat Packages (Indianapolis).

Hinchcliffe, Carpenter, Pigot, Jones and Leist, each dressed in their racing suits, playfully helped Johnson display the featured products and unveil the discounts viewers will receive. They also helped deliver a $10,000 “Small Business Superhero” award from segment sponsor Vistaprint to Peepers.

One of the fans also was connected to host Michael Strahan in the New York studio. The fan teased former New York Giants All-Pro defensive end Strahan on air that Indiana was Indianapolis Colts’ country when Strahan wore a Giants’ oven mitt in studio during the segment.

Four taped segments from IMS also were shown Wednesday on “GMA,” including Johnson’s ride around the IMS oval Tuesday in an INDYCAR Experience two-seater race car featuring a special “GMA” livery and driven by Indianapolis 500 rookie Kyle Kaiser.

ABC will televise the 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil at 11 a.m. (ET) Sunday, May 27.
