Adriana Henao had a simple goal as she approached her first-ever marathon. Finish.
Henao, the partner of three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, accomplished that task, completing the TCS New York City Marathon in less than five hours on Nov. 2.
“Goal accomplished,” she said by telephone from New York, a day after completing the 26.3 mile course in four hours, 50 minutes and 52 seconds. “I’m very happy to be finished.”
Henao, whose run raised more than $15,000 for Sean Penn’s J/P Haitian Relief Organization, was thankful for all the support she received from the INDYCAR community and her friends. And she was thankful that Castroneves was there to get her though conditions far different from their home in South Florida.
“I was so cold (while I was waiting to start),” Henao said. “And (Helio) said, ‘You are a champion and you better act like one.’ I was like, ‘OK, I will.’”
Henao won’t be making marathon running part of her regular routine. She said she plans on returning to being a mom to four-year-old daughter Mikaella and running with regular group of friends in Florida for fun.
“This was a little bit too much,” she said. “It took every bit of energy yesterday, every bit.”
