Manufacturer Points

Chevrolet earned 122 points and Honda 72 in the Verizon IndyCar Series’ season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg under the first-year Manufacturers’ Championship scoring system.

The format mirrors points awarded to the top five drivers and entrants in each race when running one of the four assigned engines allotted for the season. Bonus points are awarded for earning the Verizon P1 Award, leading the most laps and all drivers/entrants leading at least one lap.

So how did they accumulate their respective totals? Breaking it down:

50 – Points to race winner Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske
35 – Points to third-place Helio Castroneves, No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske
32 – Points to fourth-place Scott Dixon, No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing
2 – Bonus points to Power for leading the most race laps (74 of 110)
1 – Bonus point to Power, Castroneves and Mike Conway in No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka car for Ed Carpenter Racing for leading a lap

Manufacturer points totals will be in flux throughout the 18-race season as they will receive a 10-point award for each of their 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 engines that reach the 2,500-mile change-out threshold set by INDYCAR for 2014. Conversely, 10 points will be deducted from the total for each time an engine is changed before it meets the mileage threshold or surpasses the mandated number of engines for the season.
