He said it: "It's always nice to do a good job in qualifying and qualify on the pole, but we had such a good car in the race at Barber we just didn't get to show it,” Franchitti said. “But it's always nice to be fast. Hopefully, we have a good race car and we have a good race."

What to watch: It’s an even split between the two engine manufacturers with three Hondas and three Chevrolets in the top six. That should lead to an interesting and competitive battle.

Did you know: Five of the top six starters are former Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach winners. Franchitti won in 2009, Hunter-Reay in 2010, Will Power in 2012, Mike Conway in 2011 and Helio Castroneves in 2001. Fourth-place starter Takuma Sato is the only driver of the top six that has yet to win at Long Beach. Sato is also attempting to win his first IndyCar Series race. … A driver with the last name of Andretti has competed in 32 of the 39 main events in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The only years an Andretti did not compete at Long Beach was 1983 and from 2003-08.
