All 26 drivers entered in the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will have the ability, working with their corresponding engine manufacturers, to utilize anti-stall software provided by McLaren Electronics and AP Racing.

The system is new to the IZOD IndyCar Series. Teams have tested the software, which automatically disengages the clutch to keep the engine running on the racetrack and pit lane, at Sebring International Raceway and Barber Motorsports Park in the past two weeks. The clutch is on the steering wheel, in conjunction with the paddle shift system, with the new Dallara car.

It should reduce the number of caution periods for cars that run off course or spin.

The settings are fine-tuned by manufacturers Chevrolet, Honda and Lotus. Team owner/driver Ed Carpenter said the system worked flawlessly with the 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka car on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn Barber Motorsports Park course, which will play host to the series’ second event of the season on March 30-April 1.

“It’s pretty cool. Anytime you get a new system it takes some time getting used to, but it’s great technology and I think it will be good for the racing and more action for the fans,” he said.
