Nicolas Costa earned his first Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires victory and Garett Grist won for the second time over the weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Grist started third for the 20-lap second race of the doubleheader on the 2.258-mile, 13-turn road course but took the lead on the first lap. The 19-year-old from Grimsby, Ontario, driving the No. 27 Andretti Autosport entry, then held off Costa and Scott Hargrove in the closing laps.
"We were able to get into second in corner one and hold the outside in corner two to get the lead. From there, we never looked back," Grist said. "The car was great. I never had to touch the bar or anything. I just set sail, and set consistent laps. At the end, I had to turn it up a bit because Nicolas was catching up but I was able to do that relatively easily, and from there we just pulled away even more at the end. It's my second win this year and it feels good. Hopefully, we can get another at Milwaukee in two weeks."
Championship leader Spencer Pigot holds a 14-point advantage over Hargrove as the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires heads next to the Milwaukee Mile oval in Wisconsin on Aug. 16.
In the opening race, Costa overcame a bout of stomach cramps to score the victory from the pole. Costa, 22, of Brazil, rejoined Team Pelfrey in May at Lucas Oil Raceway after a partial campaign in 2013.
Ryan Booth, driving for JDC MotorSports, charged from sixth on the starting grid to finish .3458 of a second behind Costa and claim his first podium. Shelby Blackstock finished third.
"The last couple of laps I knew Ryan was coming but I was kind of not pushing. I was just pushing in the places that I thought he might pass," Costa said. "It worked. It was tight but it worked and I am really happy for Team Pelfrey. They have done a cracking job for me the last three races that I have been with them. They really deserve this and I am really happy for my first win in the championship."
