Late-race runs by Ryan Hunter-Reay and Josef Newgarden to secure first and second place in the Iowa Corn Indy 300 presented by DEKALB on July 12.

Where they started the 300-lap race on the .894-mile oval makes the results stand out. Hunter-Reay, driving the No. 28 DHL entry, started 13th following single-car qualifications (two-lap average), and Newgarden qualified 21st in the No. 67 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing car.

Following a late restart on fresh tires, both drivers stormed past the top half of the cars running to overtake race leader Tony Kanaan on the final lap. Hunter-Reay’s third victory of the season extended Andretti Autosport’s winning streak at Iowa Speedway to six years.

It was the second-most positions advanced among his 14th Indy car victories (he started 19th in winning the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race in May).

James Hinchcliffe, who won at Iowa Speedway in 2013, gained eight positions relative to his starting spot in the No. 27 United Fiber & Data car to finish sixth. It was his fifth top 10 of the season.

“I think, from where we started, it’s obviously a good improvement,” said Hinchcliffe, who heads to his home town this weekend to compete in the Honda Indy Toronto.  “It was a strong race in the end and even when we weren’t running well we fought back, worked on the car, and that’s what this United Fiber & Data crew is so good at. Not the best day, but not a bad day at all.”

Graham Rahal also moved up eight positions over the 300 laps under the lights to record his second top 10 of the season in the No. 15 National Guard car for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. It was the fifth top 10 in Rahal’s seven races at Iowa Speedway.

“I thought that (pit for tires under caution on Lap 284) was the right call. The guys with the newest tires finished first and second. We made the right calls, we just have to find more speed,” Rahal said.
